Aussant was with Samuel Black in the Rocky Mountains of Canada in 1824. Black did not trust him, claiming he was easily led to desert by others. He took a land claim north of St. Louis in 1840, and became a naturalized citizen in 1851. After the death of his wife Catherine 322 in 1847(48), he married Mary Mollelis (Molalla) in 1848. Four children by his first wife are recorded, one being Rose, who married F.X. Matthieu.
