HBRS - III Hughes, James (wife Nan-touche) 1772- 1853 Vnac. p. 7 In 1830 - "late a partner in the N.W. Co., who stood high in the estimation of his colleagues for talent as an Indian Trader, and in that of his friends and aquaintances for his correct and honourable conduct." The HBC granted him "a compassionate post" at 100 pounds per annum to some post "on account of his advanced time of life". He was an officer in the militia at the time of the priest's records. (over) Hughes was born at Montreal. He was with the N.W. Co. from 1798 to 1817 in the Fort des Prairies Dept. "as brave a fellow as ever treaded the earth", said John McDonald of Garth.
