Cardinale, Joseph + Joachim (both) when? Listed as interpreters in Athabaska Dist. Josephte Cardinal (sister to Jacques + Jacquot?) m. Joseph Desjarlais Jan. 18- 1970 Hunter Killed By Grizzly Bear FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. (AP) - A big-game hunting guide was killed by a grizzly bear while hunting in dense forest 35 miles north of this northern British Columbia community, police reported Thursday. They said the guide's body was partly eaten. Harvey Cardinal, 40, of the nearby Dog River Indian Re- serve, was found dead in 60 below weather, his leather mitts still on his hands and the safety catch on his rifle still engaged. Senior preservation officer John Mackill, who went to the scene with police after Cardi- nal's body was found by friends, said he believed the bear ate the man. Mackill said it was the first time he knew of a grizzly bear eating a human in- stead of only mauling or kill- ing. Tracks in the snow showed the bear had stalked Cardinal from behind and killed him without a struggle, Mackill said. |
